In July of 2023, we took 9 singers to Cape Breton Island to tour and explore, and learn about Gaelic music and culture. Here is a reflection on the trip by Kate, a singer with the Halifax Newcomer Choir:
The Cape Breton trip with the choir felt like an adventure and an adventure shared with the family. Cape Breton impressed us with its beauty and picturesque views and most importantly with the beautiful local souls living there. Everyone was so kind and welcoming there. The most unforgettable experience was when we did square dancing with the local community in Mabou! We will forever cherish those memories!

Thank you so much, Rachel, for organising such events for us during this trip. Forever grateful to you for this. The trip also bonded the choir people more than ever. Our friendships flourished, we connected to each other on a deeper level by sharing adventures together, we sang our hearts out while driving in the car and we are now more bonded than ever.
This choir is very special to me – I have been in Canada for now 16 years and this is the only place where I can proudly say feels like home and family where I can come to on Tuesday nights and be myself and with my family and feel accepted and welcomed and know that even when we have adventures, I will share them with my close people who get me. Cape Breton and my choir, forever in my heart. Thank you so much.
