Performance at Pier 21 for the International Work Group on Death, Dying, and Bereavement

The Halifax and Dartmouth Newcomer Choirs joined forces in October 2023 for a fabulous performance at Pier 21 in downtown Halifax. We were grateful to be invited to perform for members of the International Work Group on Death, Dying, and Bereavement, to perform a set of Nova Scotia and grief-related songs. A record 32 performers from more than 12 nationalities turned out for the performance at Halifax’s Immigration Museum. Singers were then able to share snacks and conversations with the Work Group participants, and enjoy a self-guided tour of the museum.

Event organizer Mary Ellen MacDonald of Dalhousie University commented afterward: The Newcomer Choir performed at the gala for the International Work Group on Death, Dying, and Bereavement (October 2024, Museum of Immigration). Our 130 international delegates and families adored the Choir – that was clear as they sang along with the songs, but also many told me so afterwards. It was a highlight of their evening!

What impressed me about the Choir was that, from the moment they took the stage, their energy, professionalism, and passion for music were evident. Not only did they deliver an engaging and heartfelt performance, they also brought a sense of connection and warmth that resonated deeply with our audience. Their repertoire was diverse and uplifting – I have to say I was particularly pleased with the Director’s openness and ability to tailor the repertoire to our international guests. Everyone really enjoyed the storytelling between songs which gave the audience a glimpse into the community-building power of their choir. And they loved that members stayed afterwards to chat with our delegates!

While I knew about the Choir prior to this event, the gala was the first time I heard the Choir perform. It was immediately clear to me that this group is more than just a choir; they are a vibrant, welcoming community.

I would wholeheartedly recommend the Newcomer Choir to anyone looking for a performance that is fun, meaningful, and leaves audiences inspired. Indeed, I have already spread the word in my network, letting people know that The Newcomer Choir showcases what a compassionate society should be.
